What is the current situation?

Dengue is an ongoing risk in many parts of Central and South America.

In 2022 and as of 27 July, the WHO reported around 2 million dengue cases, including 861 associated deaths, in the Americas. The five countries reporting most cases are: Brazil (1 827 617), Peru (56 021), Colombia (32 327), Nicaragua (22 887) and Ecuador (12 279).

What can travelers do to protect themselves?

Because dengue is spread by mosquito bites, all travelers to risk areas should prevent mosquito bites by using an EPA-registered insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, and sleeping in an air-conditioned room or room with window screens or under an insecticide-treated bed net.
